Train Ride to Copenhagen, Denmark (10, Aug., 2008)

August 10, 2009

Leaving Odense, we continued the train ride to Copenhagen. The train was very comfortable. There were different seat arrangements. We took a cabin.

Samantha and Steven relaxing on the train. The train was clean and comfortable. It was one of the best train ride we had in the Europe.

H.C. Andersen Playhouse, Odense, Denmark (10, Aug. 2008)

August 10, 2008

Andersen (1805 - 1875) was born in Odense. He is best know for his fairy tales, including The Little Mermaid."

There is a playhouse where plays were probably performed.
H.C. Andersen Playhouse. Samantha was knocking on the door.

The name engraving on the step.

We visited the neighborhood that H.C. Andersen lived in, and saw some old houses. We have the impression that the Scandinavian people are tall. So either the people were shorter 200 years ago or the green door was small.

Finally, we saw the ACTUAL house that H.C. Anderson lived in. Sign marking H.C. Andersen's House

Odense, Denmark (10, Aug. 2008)

August 10, 2008

We arrived at Odense, Denmark in the early afternoon. Odense is H. C. Andersen's hometown. We went to his childhood house. It was raining a little but the house was only two blocks southeast of the train station. After seeing the "H. C. Andersen Hus," we walked toward the commercial area.

Dad took a picture of the city hall. (On the map it says Odense Radhus).

Odense Radhus again.

A statue of H.C. Andersen.

This is probably a church. On the map it says Sct. Knuds Kirke (Domkirken).

Near the city hall, someone asked to have an ice cream. We didn't have Danish krone but the shop owner said it's OK to pay Euro. Someone did not do the math right. After the first lick, it was too late. A scoop of ice cream cost about US $9!!! Mom was mad.

We walked back to the station to take a train to Copenhagen. While waiting we tried to get something to eat. Karen found a McDonald. We were surprised to learn that a large fry cost US$ 5, and a hamburger cost US$ 8. We ended up eating sandwich similar to the Subway in the States.

Hamburg Train Station (10, Aug. 2008)

August 10, 2008

We started our journey to Scandinavia countries today. Mr. Chen took us to the Hanover train station to catch the train to Denmark. We had to change train in Hamburg. We had a train ride from Houston to El Paso a few years ago. But riding a train in a foreign country was a different experience.

Train Tracks in Hamburg Station

Hamburg Station was huge. The platforms were mostly indoors. Mom at the Hamburg station waiting for the connecting train.

A convenience store between 2 train tracks. This was new to us.

Inside the Hamburg Train Station. See the yellow big M? American culture? Hamburger in Hamburg!

We had a little time. Dad and Steven sneaked out to take a picture. A building just outside of the train station.

City Hall, Hanover, Germany (9, Aug., 2008)

August 9, 2008

Dad wanted to be an architect when he was a kid. So we knew that we would need to see a lot of old buildings in Europe. After visiting the farmers' market, we went to the city hall. Hanover is the capital of Lower Saxony. The city hall is magnificent!

Mom and Karen.

We used an ordinary digital camera to take these pictures. You can find nice pictures of the Hanover city hall (by professionals) in Google image and Wikipeida.

The building was damaged during WW II. It has been rebult.

Farmer's Market, Hanover, Germany (9, Aug, 2008)

August 9, 2008

Touring Hanover, we went to a farmers' market where a lot of good food was sold.

Dad was in Germany for a business trip many years ago. He had a lot of cold cuts for breakfast. No surprise.
Sausages...yum :)

Meats (cold cuts).

Our First Stop: Hanover, Germany (8, Aug, 2008)

August 8, 2008

We took Lufthansa from Houston to Frankfort and then from Frankfort to Hanover. While at Hanover airport, we were asked why we have 10 big luggage. Dad had to explain to the custom that we need the stuff for our 1 year stay at Cambridge.  But why does the luggage come to Hanover? Well, it's difficult to explain.

In Hanover, Germany, we stayed at Mom's friend Mrs. Chen's house. The backyard of the house is huge. There is a playground with a swing, and monkey bars. Steven was looking at a water pump.

Karen tried to feed Steven an apple.
