Alps Tour Day 1 (July 13, 2009)

July 13, 2009

We took a flight from Stansted in the early morning and arrived at Baden Baden, Germany at around 9:00 am. After getting a rental car, we drove toward Rhine. Dad said that we need to get across the river to France as our first destination is Strasbourg. We could not find a bridge but we found a ferry instead. The ferry took us across the river into France. It was free and there was no check point on the border.

The EU parliament is located in Strasbourg. Ill river flows through the city. After driving around for a while, we parked the car and took a tram into the city center. We saw a beautiful building besides the river and thought it was the cathedral. So we got off the tram and then found that it was a church (Saint Paul). The cathedral was not too far (15 minute walk). The huge Gothic cathedral (Notre Dame) is magnificent.

The entrance of the cathedral.

Dad likes the facade of the cathedral. Very nice stone sculptures.

Walking along the river bank of Ill. It was raining a little. But the city is absolutely beautiful.

After a short visit to Strasbourg, we headed south. We drove through the "wine country" of Alsace, France (forget about the route we took, most likely D468). The small villages were very clean and quiet. Too bad that we did not have much time to stop and walk around.

We arrived at our hotel north of Freiburg, Germany. The host gave us the direction to a German restaurant. We had a wonderful dinner. Dad started his beer festival here.
